Disadvantage:

1) There is only one rule if you damage a motorbike: The hirer pays for all repairs together with a compensatory allowance fee to cover the loss of value and loss of rental during the repair period. Insurance covering loss of or damage to motorbikes do not exist in Thailand. The price of a new standard 100 – 125cc motorbike is between 45 – 60.000 THB.

2) The motorbikes are insured to cover body damage on third party persons with up to THB 10.000. In case of death THB 30.000. This could in fact mean that you could get a legal proceeding to follow an accident case if the counterpart can document claims that exceed this amount together with pain and suffering claims.

3) The hire & passengers are not covered by this compulsory insurance.

4) Some tourist has misunderstood the Thai Road Traffic Act. Drunk driving is not to be tolerated in Thailand. If you are involved in a road accident and tested positive for alcohol there will be no insurance in the world to cover you, your passenger or third party damages. Subsequently you can end up in a true nightmare there will include imprisonment, bail, advice from lawyer etc. We got knowledge to cases that have cost the foreigner more than THB 600.000 where not even large body harm was involved on the victim.

5) When a tourist rent a motorbike 16 out of 100 persons will be involved in a minor solo accident. 3 out of 100 will get involved in average accidents involving minor personal damage. 1 out of a 100 tourist will get involved in a major accident.
