About an hour later we arrive to the elephant camp in Khao Sok, where the real adventure will start. Elephant trekking: Walking along and in a stream you’ll feel the sensation of sitting on the back of the largest land animal in the world as you are puzzled over the precise walk and agility of this great beast. The machine that can replace this animal’s performance in the forest has not yet been invented! Aided by more than forty commands, which the elephant remembers easily, the mahout or elephant driver can make the animal do even the most difficult tasks. The ride’s halfway point is a beautiful waterfall where we can swim and relax. Our transport will continue and soon we will have a tremendous bird’s eye view over the distinctive character of the landscapes in the Khao Sok area. On arrival to Art’s River View Lodge we check in. In the afternoon we depart for a new adventure. Canoeing: At the beautiful Sok River, we launch the canoes. The river twists and turns between the tall limestone casts and the evergreen rainforest. Butterflies of all colors search the banks of the river for nectar. It’s not a condition that you have tried to paddle before. In every canoe we’ll have a local guide who’ll point out wildlife you would have difficulties discovering your self. Well back in the Lodge again you can relax in the restaurants terrace. A group long tailed Macaque monkeys inhabit the mountain across from the river of Art’s. Normally before sunset the whole group will approach the river. From the restaurant deck you will have good vision of this occurrence. Overnight: Art’s River View Lodge. Day 2 / L / (This day is let out in the 3 days/2 nights program) Buddhist Temple Cave & Hiking tour inside the National Park In the morning hiking tour to Buddhist cave temple: We cross the small Sok River and move along the base of the limestone cliffs through a forest, before we reach a palm oil plantation. Monks from the nearby temple have set up meditation spots in the shade of the out hanging cliffs and in the biggest of them all the novices takes lessens by their master. (This excursion cannot be done under curtain periods in the rainy season, due to the river will flood the trail). We carry on to the main gate of the National Park where we will stop at the Visitor Centre. (not included - National Park Fee - In moment of writing THB 400 per person | Child THB 200. within the National Park we continue our hike and follow the track. Side paths are leading down to the river bed where rapids and beautiful small waterfalls become visible. At one of these spots we will enjoy our picnic lunch. It takes well trained eyes to discover wildlife in the rainforest. For this reason it’s good to have you own guide. In the period from January to February you can be lucky to see the world’s biggest flower The Rafflesia blossom. The natural habitat for this flora is in hill terrain and normally it requires a specialized guide to find them. Overnight at Art’s River View Lodge. Day 3 / L, D Gulin of Khao Sok – Raft house & Cave hike. In the morning we check out and depart for a new adventures day. We continue to Chiew Lan Lake about 70 km away and depart from the Rajjabrapa pier. On the way to the raft houses we will sail amidst spectacular rock formations and make a detour for Gulin of Khao Sok. A scenic place on the lake. Short after arrival to our floating bungalows in a remote corner of the lake lunch will be served. There will be time fore a refreshing swim in the crystal clear lake before we will start a hiking tour through the rainforest accompanied by the sounds of the Gibbon monkeys call. On the way a bamboo raft will bring us to a newly discovered dripstone cave. Well back on the bungalow raft enjoy paddling along the banks of the lake around sunset to scout for wildlife. When the dark has covered the jungle dinner will be served. A generator will provide electricity until bedtime. Night at the simple Bamboo Raft House. (0 star rating, - but millions above your head). Day 4 / B Morning Safari – Back to pier & Drop off at your destination. Wake up with the sun and get full value of the stay in the wilderness. Before breakfast take a canoe or arrange with the boat driver to take you for a safari to scan the banks. This time of day the animals is most active and if you see branches in the canopy flick from one side to the other, then it should be a group of monkeys searching for the first meal of the day. Breakfast will be served shortly after you arrive back to the raft. Leisure time before checking out from the raft and heading back to the pier by long tailed boat. Return to Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi or Surat Thani after your choice.

ORIGINAL TROPICAL RAINFOREST ENVIRONMENT - LIKE

MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO.

The tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia today belongs to the

oldest eco-systems in the world. The diversity of the flora has

been dated back some 160 million years, which is older than both

the Amazons-and the Central African rainforest. The rainforest

on the Kra Isthmus has more than 200 species of trees per

hectare which is more than any other place on the earth. In

temperate rainforest by contrast it would be considered

exceptionally diverse to have ten tree species per hectare.

Tree-trunks tower 30 meters in the air, before the first branches

begin to form the canopy, - adding another 30 - 35 meter to the

total height. Trees like these usually belong to the dipterocarp

family and may be several centuries old. They are the preferred

trees for gibbons when singing, grooming and sleeping, and they

provide excellent habitat for hornbill nesting cavities.The fertile

undergrowth, is a favored habitat for countless other species.

The Kingdom of Thailand has since the seventies, made a great

effort to preserve, what is left of the original forest.

Khao Sok National Park is in fact only a small part of a area with

virgin rainforest covering several thousand square kilometers

on the peninsula between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman

Sea. The rainforest continues well into Burma (Myanmar).

Parts of Khao Sok's woodland was flooded in 1982 when the

Rajjaprabha Dam Project was completed and the artificial lake

Chiew Larn was created. Literally saying, now you are sailing

through the green and dense rainforest.

In nature one takes only a picture and leaves only a footprint!

a refreshing dip in the lake's clear water until dinner is served. After dinner and after darkness has settled we board the long-

tail boat again too explore the lake shores in the hope of spotting wildlife. (Canceled if it rains)

Expedition to the crystal cave where glittering stalagmites and stalactites explored.

After 70km and 1 ½ hour's drive we arrive to Rajjabrapa pier. Boarding a long-tailed boat to discover the 165 Sq. km big

Chiew Larn Lake. This manmade lake was created in 1982 by flooding the rainforest for the use of, the then newly build

hydropower plant.

After check-in time to swim and lunch in the crystal clear lake. Excursion to one of the caves with long-tailed boat (In

case of rain the cave visit is cancelled). During dinner the guide will decide whether to make a night safari - or a early

morning safari the next day. Night in the rainforest on the floating bamboo resort.

DAY 3: / B / World Class Nature Impressions.

Breakfast overlooking the stunning mountain formations, which will becoming more and more visible as the morning mist

burns away. Relaxation, swimming and maybe a canoe tour.

Over of the morning we leave The Floating Natural Paradise and head back to the pier our land transport will be waiting

and brings us back to the resort.

Afternoon excursion to the elephant camp / minimum 1½ hour elephant trekking through rainforests and rubber

Mosquitoes:

Its normal too imagine that surrounded by a humid climate with plenty of water, swarms of mosquito's should be present.

Mysteriously however, that's not the case in reality and that includes both the lake and the cottages on land - but of course

there will always be two of the kind. Do you have a natural appeal to mosquitoes - then they will find you.

Mosquitoes in Thailand is smaller than Northern European mosquitoes and they are silent until they pass the ear.

Malaria:

There are Malaria and Dengue Fever (a flu-like viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes) in Northern & Southern Thailand.

Prophylaxis in many cases got side effects. Mosquitoes are active at sunrise / sunset time. Mosquitoes are attracted by

dark clothing, while bright keeps them at a distance. Change to long legged pants and use insect repellent.

It is extremely rare for tourists to be diagnosed with any of the diseases mentioned. The likelihood of being involved in a

traffic accident is many times bigger.

Good mosquito repellent can be purchased in Thailand and contains up to 25% active substances which are banned in some

countries.

Tasteless and beyond understanding to a foreigner:

Occasionally, it could happen that Thai company employees / groups are staying at The Floating Raft resorts. These groups

haven't connected to the countryside to enjoy the silence, but rather to fight it with loudspeakers and karaoke singing most of

the night. It is quite clear seen with Western eyes, this is absolutely not the experiences that foreigners come to Khao Sok

to experience. That it can even can happen - is a combination of Thai tolerance and economic greed.

Seen through the eyes of Thai’s - it's their country, their national park and it is their tradition, which has priority. Authorities,

environmental groups and others who might oppose this view are ignored. Wild Kingdom Tours cannot be held responsible for

any genes, defects, defaults or negligence from accommodations or their employees.

Tasteless and beyond understanding for Thai nationals:

Public display of endearment or intense tongue kisses among lovers will make any Thai embarrassed. It is not common to

shows emotion to the opposite sex in public. Flagrant exposure of the vital parts of the body is considered to be offensive,

however Thais have gradually become accustomed to foreign girls wearing bikini.

Thais are polite people and have a huge tolerance compared to us. For this reason, locals rarely point out when we do

something wrong - but we make many mistakes in their eyes. Criticizing food in public is also very offensive.

Accommodations on private tour arrangements

Description of Arts River View Lodge: Art's River View Lodge - True to Nature and true to mankind. The best located bungalow resort in the Khao Sok area. So far no multinational hotel chain has found its way to the beauty of this place and that’s why you will not find any 4 or 5 star accommodations. Art’s River View Lodge can on the other hand by night offer millions of stars glittered in the sky in competition with the fireflies. This Resort is genially located with respect for the surrounding nature. All bungalows have a terrace and several of them face the Sok River. All units has electricity (but power cuts is not unusual), mosquito nets cover the beds, electrical fan, bath room with sit down toilet and show with non heated water. The staffs are not addicted to stress and small misunderstandings could occur when you order meals from the varied and reasonable priced menu card. For breakfast try the yoghurt mixed with muesli or fresh fruits (this is a big bowl, so maybe this alone will fill you up). Do you want a real knock out drink, try Art’s Jungle Juice. “Best views, Best huts & Best food”. Description of Chiew Larn Floating Paradise: The Rafthouses are rustic bungalows, built on floating pontoons. We always book the DLX bungalows. In case these are not available we will book the more nature like bamboo bungalows. Here the beds are double mattresses, placed directly on the flexible bamboo flooring. Everything is clean and nice, but accommodation in this environment requires that you possess a minimum of camp or scout spirit. Mosquito nets are provided over the beds. Toilets and showers are shared at a separate location. The staffs live in harmony with the nature surrounding them. The attitude of the people living there daily life in this area, is very relaxed. Please don’t show offensive behaviors like nude swimming, kissing in public and criticize food dishes. Water that will be served at all times, is clean. Mistakes and misunderstandings are normal to happen. Try to be tolerant in this matter. There English skills are not at any university level, but even though you will get many interesting information’s about the flora and fauna in the National Park. Meals served are prepared with the usual Thai loving care and considered the simplicity of the cooking facilities the food is very delicious. The raft house has a limited supply of beer and soft drinks available. If you are a snack eater, then bring it with you to the lake.

The tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia today belongs to the oldest eco-systems in the world. The diversity of the flora has been dated back some 160 million years, which is older than both the Amazons-and the Central African rainforest. The rainforest on the Kra Isthmus has more than 200 species of trees per hectare which is more than any other place on the earth. In temperate rainforest by contrast it would be considered exceptionally diverse to have ten tree species per hectare. Tree-trunks tower 30 meters in the air, before the first branches begin to form the canopy, - adding another 30 – 35 meter to the total height. Trees like these usually belong to the dipterocarp family and may be several centuries old. They are the preferred trees for gibbons when singing, grooming and sleeping, and they provide excellent habitat for hornbill nesting cavities. +++ Description: Gibbons are perhaps the most conspicuous animals in Southeast Asian rainforests. Their songs are described as some of the finest music ever uttered by a wild land mammal and their remarkable power and grace in swinging through their tall tree habitat is unparalleled. To many naturalists, gibbons are the voice and soul of the forest, an observation also held by indigenous peoples who have shared the same forests for centuries. Because of their small body size, gibbons are termed lesser apes. Their arms are relatively longer than their legs, - which allows rapid movement through the forest canopy and access to preferred foods. Gibbons come in many different combinations of color, including jet black, silvery, rufous or cinnamon; some species' colors vary with gender while other species change color as they mature. +++ Description: Hornbills is the name of a family (Bucerotide) of large Jurassic tropical birds which have enormous curved bills and often a bony cask on the head. Thirty of the world’s 54 spices of hornbill occur in Asia with thirteen species found in Thailand. Khao Sok has five confirmed species of hornbill including the rare helmeted hornbill (Rhinoplax Vigil). Living relics from at least fifteen million years ago, the hornbill as a species is one of the oldest birds surviving on Earth. As fruit eaters they are critical to seed dispersal. +++ The Kingdom of Thailand has since the seventies, made a great effort to preserve, what is left of the original forest. Today Thailand has more than one hundred National Parks and none hunting areas, and in the schools a vigorous work is made to promote understanding for these natural values. There’s now a total logging band on all original forest and the penalty for poaching and illegal logging, is now life imprisonment. Information, education and rehabilitation programs have already succeeded. Animal species before thought almost extinct are now once again on the increase. Imagine that you're onboard a time machine that's will take you 130 million years back in the earth's evolution. Here you'll

begin a journey, among one of this planets most unique limestone formations. Back then, these mountains were part of

an ancient sea, where corals formed mile thick lime sediment on the sea floor. 50 million years of increasing pressure

transformed the soft lime into hard rock.

At the same time the earths continental plates started to shift towards each other, hence rising whole mountain chains

from what used to be sea floor.

The new-formed mountains began to crack, allowing melting water from the end of the ice ages, to erode the rock. The

softer parts were washed away forming huge crevices and caves.

This process is still going on with every drop of rain water, releasing microscopically pieces of limestone onto the ever-

growing stalagmits and stalactites. These in turn form the most amazing sculpture like structures.

In 1982 the opening of Rajjaprabha Dam took place - closing off the Pasaeng river and creating a 165 square kilometer

lake, inside the National Park Boundaries. The waters from Chiew Larn Lake now generates electricity to the Surat

Thani region and provides a steady flow of water to the farmlands in the dry season.

Today there’re more than a hundred beautiful islands on the Chiew Lan Lake. The lake is surrounded by Khao Sok

National Park and together they are forming a wildlife sanctuary, which is one of the most exciting original rainforest

habitats in all of Thailand. Here still roam big mammals, like elephants, tapirs as well as leopards, bears and wild

boars. Tigers have not been observed for the last decades. It's also home to numerous species of monkeys and gibbon

apes. Here they still haven't felt the heavy pressure from man. The 738 km 2 area reaches an altitude of almost 1000m above

sea level and it’s common to see several species of hornbill, kingfishers and paradise birds.
