Siddhartha Gauthama , better known as The Buddha, was a Northern Indian prince , who lived
between the years 560 and 480 before our era. The official year in Thailand is therefore 2557.
According to the legend the temple on Doi Suthep was landscaped to this place because a white
elephant carrying the relics of the Buddha, suddenly ran away from a parade through Chiang Mai.
The elephant headed towards the mountain, which was covered by forest and began the climb
followed by monks. After a while the elephant reached heights of the mountain - but were now
totally exhausted.Three trumpet sounds through the trunk was expelled and then it laid down and
died. This, the monks assumed, was a signal and therefore the temple was erected here.

WKT 017B - Chiang Rai, Golden Triangle, Elephants, Waterways & Long Neck - 2 days / 1 night
Start Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai
B= Breakfast / L= Lunch / D= Dinner
Wild Kingdom Tours can arrange connecting hotel stay in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.
DAY 1 - / L / Long Neck Tribe - Kok River - Elephant Trekking - The White Temple - Chiang Rai
07:00 Pick up at your hotel by English speaking guide
and private transport. We drive through scenic mountain
landscapes towards the idyllic town of Thaton by the
Kok River. The area has many ethnic minority groups
who wear colorful costumes. Most hill tribes, have
immigrated from Burma and China more than hundred
years ago. In 1960's the authorities began to integrate
them into Thai society and today education, is
compulsory to all. Each tribe continue to speak its own
language. After another 15 minutes, where coffee
plantations is passed, we arrive at NanaPho - The
village inhabited by the "Long Neck People".
Coffee beans
The name arose because the women adorn themselves with brass rings around the neck ,
pushing the shoulders downwards. The origin of this neck ring tradition is unknown and have lead
to many explanations. According to a Kayan legend, the stem mother of the tribe was a dragon
with a long beautiful neck and the tradition is an imitation of her. Others believe the tradition is a
result of  protecting women from tiger attacks.
Note: To some people this visit, can be experienced as a visit to a human zoo. Kayan tribe
originates from the mountains of Myanmar. Unlike their place of origin, there stay in Thailand
gives them the opportunity to earn money by displaying themselves to foreigners.
Lunch before we continue to the Kok River banks.
On the Nam Mae Kok River, we board a longtailboat. Scenic views of teakwood plantations on
the hillsides and fishermen with nets making a living from the river. We go ashore at the Karen
village, Baan Ruammit - and learn that this tribe for centuries have had elephant training as
their trademark.
We place ourselves in elephant chair on its back and ride off into the surrounding countryside
under the Mahut's (elephant driver) control . Previously the village was functioning as a
logging station for timber to be floated on to Chiang Rai. These times drew to an end, when the
Thai government in the 1980s banned all logging in state forests. Baan Raummit acts as a
central hub that connects the various minority hill tribes such as the Akha , Karen, Lahu and
Lisu.
After this "Elephantine" experience our driver will continue towards Chiang Rai, where we visit
the beautiful Wat Rong Khun - also known as The White Temple. Wat Rong Khun is different
from other temples in Thailand , as its "Ubosot" (consecrated assembly hall) is designed in white
with a partial use of white glass. The white color stands for Buddha's purity, the white glass
stands for Buddha's wisdom. Visitors will find it quite bizarre that there are modern pictures of
Hollywood symbols in the temple such as Spiderman, Batman & the Canadian actor Keanu
Reeves - best known from the role of the Matrix.
The tour continues onto Chiang Rai Old Town. We will check in at the central Wang Come
Hotel. The hotel is only a few minutes' walk from the night market and it is recommended to go
there for dinner. Besides being one of the best night markets in Thailand, you will also find
numerous food stalls with goodies that will evoke a mouth-watering situation.
Night Wangcome Hotel / Deluxe room.
DAY 2 - / B, L / Golden Triangle - Mekong Cruise - Mae Sai border.
Maesai Border
07:30 After breakfast we proceed to the northernmost point in The Kingdom - the town of Mae
Sai. The counterpart border town in Myanmar is called Tachilek. Vigorous trade in precious
stones, cheap Chinese electronics and tobacco are among the most common merchandise.
From here we follow the border line until Sop Ruak, where overlooking Laos and Burma from the
banks of the Mekong River is possible. We eat lunch and visit the museum, which tells the
story of the opium trade before this area came under the authorities' control.
We board a riverboat and enjoy the breeze and the scenery along the Mekong river banks of
the respective countries. Mekong River is also a busy passenger boats waterway bringing in
passengers from China further up north.
Activities has come to the end and via Chiang Rai we return to Chaing Mai about 21:00.

DAY 2 - / B, L / Cave exploring - Mud Spa Treatment - Mae Hong Son.
Mork Fa Waterfall - Doi Suthep Plu National Park
08:30 Pick up at your hotel by English speaking guide
and private transport or in Chiang Mai airport before
10:30. After 1 hour's drive on the winding main road to
Pai we arrive at Doi Suthep Pui National Park. We
walk about 20 minutes to the beautiful Mork Fa
waterfall 40-50m (130-160 ft.) high. Bring your
swimwear and take a dip in under the big shower.
After another 30-40 minutes drive we arrive to Pa Pae
Hot Springs, also called Pong Duead Geyser in Huai
Nam Dang National Park. Occasionally the geyser
erupts up to 2 meters. The surface temperature of
the geyser is between 90-99 degrees Celsius (194-210F), while the underground water will be
between 170-203 degrees Celsius (338-397F). The place was first known to the public in 1957.
The mountainous route continues and 7 km before we reach Pai we stop at the old bridge. At the
final stage of the 2nd World War the Japanese destroyed the important bridge that they had built.
As war compensation, a iron bride no longer in use was bought in the United States -
disassembled and shipped all the way. Activity: Choose Bamboo Rafting or Elephant trekking 1
hour. From here check in at Muang Pai Resort or similar. Evening visit to the Pai night market.
Night at Muang Pai Resort.
Today's first goal is Lod Cave - Tham Lod in Thai
language. This large spectacular limestone cave has
a system of rivers that wind their way through the
interior of the cave. From our raft and in the glow of
the kerosene lamp we discover most beautiful
stalagmites and stalactites and find that the cave
also got a large colony of both bats and swifts.
Furthermore remains of prehistory in the form of cave
drawings and reasonably well preserved burial coffins
are found. On route lunch break at a local restaurant.
Today's highlight is the famous Phu Klon Mud Spa.
We included a wellness treatment consisting of
Facial Scrub, Facial massage and Phu Clone Facial Mud Mask. Phu Klon's hot springs and
mineral water flows to the surface from the deep underground. The mud and clay carried is rich
in minerals. The substances have positive effect on human health, skin and circulatory system.
The Natural clay is black and fastidiously clean and uncontaminated by sulfur.
Phu Klon was discovered by a group of French and Thai researchers who send samples of clay
and mineral water to Thermalium Luxeuil laboratory in France for further analysis. Four years of
extensive research has determined that the clay from Phu Clone meet international standard
requirements for microbiological properties.
Reportedly, there are only three other places in the world that can provide the same conditions
for a mud spa.
Thirty years younger, we continue the last bit to Mae Hong Son and Fern Resort, who take pride
in protecting nature and the environment at the most responsible way. It's expected that guests
will help contributing to this attitude while staying here. If this resort was good enough for Brad
Pitt and Angelina Jolie, - hopefully it will be good enough 4U2.
In the evening we visit the old town and there will be time on your own to find a restaurant and
look around.
Night at Fern Resort.
DAY 3 - / B, L / Kayan (Long Neck Tribe), Temple landmark & return to Chiang Mai.
Mae Hong Son
On this last day we head for Huay Pu Keng village,
which can be reached in 30 minutes by boat from Mae
Hong Son. We will visit Kayan (long neck) tribe.
This tribe came to Thailand as refugees from Burma.
Without citizenship and rights to move freely - one of
their few resources of income is to sell handicrafts to
tourists. The rings that are said to be beauty-enhancing
for women are not really rings, but one piece of winded
brass.
The neck is not stretched, but it's the shoulders that are
pressed downwards. 4 years of age a girl will gets the
first set of neck rings. Adult women carry a
weigh of about five kilograms around the neck.
After this remarkable excursion we visit the temple landmark Phratahart Doi Kong Moo at the top
of the hill - overlooking Mae Hong Son town, airport and mountains. It's said that you haven't
really been to Mae Hong Son if you haven't visited this sight. Finally we will begin the 5 hour drive
back to Chiang Mai. Lunch will be taken on the way at a local restaurant. Expected arrival 19:00.

08:00 Pick up at your hotel by English speaking guide
and private transport bound for Chiang Rai. We do a
halfway stop at Mae Khachan's hot springs. Boiling eggs
in the hottest pools are popular and in others you can dip
your feet. 5 km south of Chiang Rai we find the beautiful
Wat Rong Khun also called the White Temple. Wat
Rong Khun is different from other temples in Thailand ,
as its "Ubosot" (consecrated assembly hall) is designed

We will take lunch near Chiang Rai and continue to the Golden Triangle, where Myanmar,
Laos and Thailand shares borders to the Mekong River.
We board a riverboat and enjoy the breeze and the scenery along the Mekong river banks of the
respective countries. Mekong River is also a busy passenger boats waterway bringing in
passengers from China further up north. Then we check in at Baan Thai Resort.
In the evening we walk to the view point where the three countries Thailand, Laos and Burma /
Myanmar shares a common border facing the Mekong River.
Night at Baan Thai Resort or similar.
In the morning we take a closer look around the area
(this can be done on horseback, if requested and will be
booked separately).
By the zigzag mountain roads we say goodbye to the
descendants of China's Kuomintang fighters and visit
Karen minority tribe called Kayan, - better known as
"The Long Neck Tribe" because the women adorn
themselves with brass rings around the neck pushing the

DAY 1 - / L / The road to The Golden Triangle
DAY 2 - / B, L / Maesai border, Doi Tung and Tea growing Doi Mae Salong
08:30 After breakfast we proceed to the northernmost
point in The Kingdom - the town of Mae Sai. The
counterpart border town in Myanmar is called Tachilek.
Vigorous trade in precious stones, cheap Chinese
electronics and tobacco are among the most common
merchandise. Lunch at a local restaurant before we
continue to the Royal Gardens on Doi Tung mountain.
Beautifully landscaped and near the summit the view
over the valley and background mountains is magnificent.
The gardens are administrated by the Royal Forest
Department and also an important training center for
local residents, who want to gain skill in the service
MaeSai Border
industry. The mountain roads bends and twists as we approach the Tea growing area around
Doi Mae Salong mountain, - sometimes called'' Little Switzerland'' of Thailand.
In this rugged landscape the beaten Chinese army of "KMT" settled down on the run for Mao's
forces. KMT is the short form of the Kuomintang, which refers to the Chinese Nationalist Party,
under Chiang Kai-shek's supervision. The army was forced to flee to Burma, Northern Thailand
and Taiwan in 1949 by Mao Zedong's communist army. Exile soldiers and descendants from this
historic heartbeat, found in the Doi Mae Salong area very suitable for Tea growing and
introduced the Oolong sort from their home of origin. The Thai government program to
integrate these Chinese, mainly from  the Yunnan Province, in to the mainstream Thai society,
has sought to be only a partially success. Despite 60 years of effort, there is still a strong
Chinese heritage in the area and the Chinese is still the mother tongue of most residents. In the
village at the top of the mountain Doi Mae Salong we spend the night at Little Home Guesthouse
or similar.
