WKT016 K - Private Tiger Temple and River Kwai Jungle Raft 2 days / 1 night.

WKT0016K - River Kwai Private - 2 days / 1 night.                                     B = Breakfast / L = Lunch / D = Dinner
DAY 1: / L, D / Tiger Temple & River Kwai Jungle Raft
07:00 Private pickup at your hotel in Bangkok by personal English speaking guide and minivan. First stop after a good
hour's drive is the clay pot factory who makes the giant jars used to collect and store rainwater in the country. Then we visit
Chompol Cave - a stalactite cave complex with high ceilings. Beautiful huge stalactites and stalagmites, created by drops
of water containing calcium on the same spot over thousands of years.
The area outside the cave is home to a major colony of Macaque monkeys (Rhesus monkey). Lunch at a local restaurant.
Now we carry on to the temple, which specializes in being a refuge for wild species. The monks look after the animals to
ensure their welfare. Many of the animals has been brought to the temple after been neglected by previous owners.
The concept is that you can be photographed together with the tigers.
Many tourists claim that the tigers are drugged. This is an urban myth that has no parallel with reality. Tigers are cats and in
nature quite complacent and lazy when they are well fed. The tigers are in fact only fed with cooked meat, not to encourage
their taste for blood.
At Pakseng pier we proceed by long-tailed boat up the River Kwai Noi towards our floating Jungle accommodation
bypassing unspoiled mountainous landscape with dense jungle and a small waterfall near the border into Burma.
River Kwai Jungle Rafts have simple facilities. All rooms features private shower with unheated water and a toilet.
Electricity is replaced by kerosene lamps . "Primitive - in a groovy way". After check in - experienced swimmers can try
out the exciting River Floating. Grab a lifejacket and jump into the river from the extreme upstream point of the raft. Steer
towards the middle of the river, avoiding drifting under the restaurant, built out from the raft. After the restaurant is passed -
drifting in good speed, swim toward the raft again and grab hold of the latter at the ending point of the raft. If you don't get
hold of the raft again, you will continue several hundred kilometers - ending up in the Gulf of Thailand. Good luck! (Staff we
be monitoring the swimming guests). In the evening - after dinner, natives from the nearby Mon village will perform their
local dances . Subsequently, the sounds from the jungle will be present why'll fireflies are dancing near the river surface.
Night on River Kwai Jungle Raft.

DAY 2 : / M , F / The Railway of Death and The Bridge on the River Kwai.
After a healthy breakfast we visit the Mon peoples tribal village originating from neighboring Burma. Men wear sarong
and the women powder there the face with Thanakha - a yellowish-white cosmetic paste , to keep their skin looking young.
Support the village - buy a practical sarong, which besides the purpose as garment (also for men) , can be used as table
cloth, bed sheet, seat cover , pajamas, sunscreen , head cover , backpack and probably many other things. If your neighbor
enjoys tobacco , you can endow him with a genuine Burmese cigar.
Before midday we will head back by boat to Pakseng where we take lunch .
We board the train that has been nicknamed "Death Railway Train". The 415 km long railway was built by Allied prisoners
of war and local slave laborers . 16,000 POWs and 100,000 local died because of the inhuman work, starvation and untreated
sickness . The train slowly bypasses  the old wooden structures in the jungle with creaking sounds until we have arrived at
Kanchanaburi where "The Bridge on the River Kwai" is found. We visit the memorial for the victims and the small
museum that tells the story of prisoners during the World War II.
16:00 we will depart and head back towards the capital Bangkok.
+++
If you plan to continue the journey towards The South - there are no need to drive +3 hours back to Bangkok. We will drop
you off at the railway station in Nakhon Pathom. Here you can join the night train in the sleeping wagon to Surat Thani -

and all other localities in Southern Thailand. Tickets for the night train should minimum be purchased 14 days upfront of

Welcome to the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi information.

Wake up call by elephants at River Kwai Jungle Raft
Kanchanaburi - worth a visit when staying in Bangkok or are heading towards the South.
About 130 kilometers west of Bangkok the beautiful Kanchanaburi province is reached, made famous by the 1957 Oscar reward winning movie "Bridge over the River Kwai" telling the tragic story of POW during World War ll.
The Japanese occupation troops had as a priority goal to build a more than 400 km long railroad supply line between Thailand and Burma. Local forced laborers and Allied prisoners of war were deployed to carry out the work . 16,000 POWs and 100,000 local died because of the inhumane conditions.

The Thai part of the railway still exists as a real line with the train running slow and creaking over the old wooden structures in the jungle until arriving to Kanchanaburi, where "The Bridge over the River Kwai" is found.

Kanchanaburi shares a border with its historic rival Burma and many ethnic minorities from the neighboring country have taken up residence in this province - either as refugees or as cheap labor for the Thais .
Nature is incredibly beautiful, with rivers, lakes , waterfalls and large forests. The mountains in the distance are the borderline between Thailand and Burma.
Nowadays, the experience is quite different than the perception of a mosquito - and leech infected wilderness , as reflected in the famous film.
After Kancanaburi its possible to continue towards Hua Hin or board the night train to Surat Thani - arriving next morning.

In nature take only a picture - leaving only a footprint!

Practical information

Khao Sok
Overall good to know
To Bring: Flashlight, insect repellent, sunscreen, good shoes, towel or sarong, swimwear, daypack, medicine if used, toilet paper for hikes and rain poncho.
Mosquitoes:
Its normal too imagine that surrounded by a humid climate with plenty of water, swarms of mosquito's should be present. Mysteriously however, that's not the case in reality and that includes both the lake and the cottages on land - but of course there will always be two of the kind. Do you have a natural appeal to mosquitoes - then they will find you.
Mosquitoes in Thailand is smaller than Northern European mosquitoes and they are silent until they pass the ear.
Malaria:
Concerning malaria and vaccinations, we as an travel agency are not allowed to advise, because we are not doctors. Contact your doctor or the Serum Institute. Click here and learn more: http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/asia-(east)/thailand.aspx
There are Malaria and Dengue Fever (a flu-like viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes) in Northern & Southern Thailand.
Prophylaxis in many cases got side effects. Mosquitoes are active at sunrise / sunset time. Mosquitoes are attracted by dark clothing, while bright keeps them at a distance. Change to long legged pants and use insect repellent.
It is extremely rare for tourists to be diagnosed with any of the diseases mentioned. The likelihood of being involved in a traffic accident is many times bigger.
Good mosquito repellent can be purchased in Thailand and contains up to 25% active substances which are banned in some countries.
About the 7 Oscar winning movie from 1958: ”The Bridge on the River Kwai” (wikipedia).
Trade: Around the bridge area there are souvenir shops, restaurants and places that sell gemstones, - mostly jade. The origin of these is said to be from the neighboring country. I order to do a good deal you must have a certain knowledge of how to value precious stones.
Season all year:
Expect it can rain - even outside the rainy season from November to April.
Expect it to be tremendous sunshine - even in the rainy season from May to October.
The summer months from July to September is usually months with only a few weekly rain showers • November to January are the cool period. This is especially noticeable after sunset, in the hills and through the night • February - May is considered the hot season.
+++
Busy periods:
It's very difficult to find accommodation with a short notice in the following periods:
14 days before and after Christmas, New Year, the Chinese New Year in January/February, European School  winter holiday season mid February, Songkran mid April,
The dates of the Chinese New Year are variable and falls in January or February. Two weeks on both sides of this festival is period there will be mega busy everywhere. People of Chinese origin - not only from China - but from around the world are travel active during this period. View this year's period for the holiday - Click here.

Tips:
Is not compulsory, but a forceful way to show if you have been satisfied with the service provided.
A fair tip for a local guide would be THB 50 per day per adult participant.
At hotels, porter's suitcase handle can be noted with a THB 50 tip.
The maid THB 20-50 per day. A good trick is to pay the tip direct to the maid upfront and you will 99% sure get the best service during your stay. If you have had the same driver for several days and are comfortable with the driving a THB 50 tip per day per adult participant, will be received with pleasure.
Taxi drivers in Bangkok that drive by the meter should be tipped as there has been no regulation of the fees in 12 years. If you negotiated a fixed price - tips are not expected.
Smaller restaurants - street kitchens that only serve local dishes for locals, are not accustomed to receiving tips. Nothing wrong in letting the coins change remain on the table.
Restaurants that serve international, European/American menu and English speaking staff often expect tip.
Gratitude's are received with a Wai (a slight bow, with the palms pressed together in front of the forehead).
+++
Tasteless and beyond understanding for Thai nationals:
Public display of endearment or intense tongue kisses among lovers will make any Thai embarrassed. It is not common to shows emotion to the opposite sex in public. Flagrant exposure of the vital parts of the body is considered to be offensive, however Thais have gradually become accustomed to foreign girls wearing bikini.
Thais are polite people and have a huge tolerance compared to us. For this reason, locals rarely point out when we do something wrong - but we make many mistakes in their eyes. Criticizing food in public is also very offensive.
