Khao Lak lies in the Takuapa district of Phang-nga Province, a seaside province with an extraordinary view, both on shore and underwater. Khao Lak is located about 50 kilometres north of Phuket Island on the mainland. It is an area, where the lowlands, that extend behind the coast, disappear and the rain forest covered mountains are reaching the sea shore. This area was declared a national park some years ago. After passing this rocky headland, the beaches of Khaolak start, that stretch for about 20 kms northward to the old tin mining town of Takuapa. A land of tin mines and fantastic beaches, the marjority of the region is mountainous with very limted basin area, 57% of which is mangrove and evergree forest. Khao Lak itself is a national park area, resplendent with rich natural attractions and a convenient departure point to a number of Phang-nga's many points of interest including the famous Similan Islands and Surin Islands. If you a newcomer for this area, you will be offered beaches, jungle covered moutains, forested valleys, mangroves and estuaries. Khao Lak (Thai: เขาหลัก) is a seaside resort in Thailand, located 80 km north of Phuket International Airport in Takua Pa district, Phang Nga province and popular as a departure point for liveaboard scuba diving trips to the Similan Islands. The pristine coastline is synonymous with beauty. Nearby rubber and palm plantations dot the coastal region and most nearby inland areas. The major national Highway 4 runs north and south and mostly parallel to the coastline. Khao Lak is a thriving tourist destination for backpackers, up-scale tourists, adventure tourists and seasoned scuba enthusiasts. Local peoples are mostly Thai often with some Chinese ancestry. The diversity of ethnic groups and cultural influences within and surrounding Khao Lak makes this region rich in agricultural, fishing and dry good products. Tourism is Khao Lak's revenue generating entity, becoming Thailand's most popular jumping-off point for the world renowned Similan Islands. The local economy in the town is based on the tourist hotels, local shops and restaurants, and the diving trade. Most of the foreign tourists are European, many from Scandinavia, Germany and the United Kingdom. The wider area produces some rubber and palm oil; there is also a small amount of subsistence agriculture. Following the tsunami of December 2004 (see below) the local economy was ruined as it was in nearly all coastal towns hit by the devastating wave. It is estimated that 60 percent of the resorts were mid-construction, with nearly 4,000 rooms already available. Most coastal resorts were either heavily damaged or completely demolished, resulting in a great loss of life and major blow to the local tourist economy. At the time of the tsunami, Khao Lak was Thailand's fastest growing tourist destination. December 2007 has marked the third anniversary of the tsunami and Khao Lak's economy has nearly bounced back. Most of the coastal resorts have completed their reconstruction or repairs and the tourism has flourished. In some respects its better than pre-tsunami days. Nearly all volunteers have moved on to other parts of the world to render aid as Khao Lak locals pick up the remaining pieces, pulling their community back together. Seaside and inland resorts are indicating full bookings during high seasonal months of November to March. Though some prices have risen to reasonable and pre-tsunami rates, Khao Lak is still a bargain compared to other regions of Thailand and Southeast Asia. Where Phuket is a destination for most, Khao Lak is experiencing the traveler that wants more secluded beaches, quiet nights and family oriented activities. Hotels and bungalows range from $15USD to $700USD per night depending on your budget. However, this does not mean Khao Lak is exempt from scams, such as Thai tailor scam. Inexpensive bungalows generally feature meager amenities, whereas the 5-Star resorts such as Le Meridien, Ramada or Sarojin Resorts boast first-class amenities. There seems to be something for everyone's budget. Khao Lak the mountain is located 25 kms from Amphoe Takua Pa, one Highway No 4 (Thai Muang - Takua Pa), taking a left turn between Km 56-57. Before reaching Amphoe Thai Muang, the mountain - Khao Lak can be seen. On the mountain, there is the Chao Pho Khao Lak Shrine (as the photo). Opposite to the shrine, entrance of Khao Lak National Park Office, lies a stony beach with rocks and boulders of all sizes strewn all over the beach. The beach is sandy, wide, not much long, clean and good to swim. North of the beach is a Khao Lak mountain and south is the pier to Similan National Park. Khao Lak as named from a national park (Khao Lak-Lam Ru). The park was declared a national park in August 1991. It occupies a vast area.

Log Wildkingdom Tours - Great Hornbill. Hornbill's is a family member of a large Old World tropical bird spices which have enormous curved bills and often a bony cask on the head. Thirteen of the worlds 54 species occur in Thailand. As fruit eaters they are critical to seed dispersal, with out them the forest would not be as luxuriant odr diverse. Great hornbills mate for life and, like all hornbills, nest in hollw tree cavities. The female will plaster the entrance with a mixture of mud, tree bark, wooddust, food debris and even her own fethers. Only a small crack, big enugh to let the male passing food trough will remain the the contact to the outer world. For millions of years hornbills have been a model for good parenting.
